Hungry Caterpillar Reading Space

This project was designed around the brief  ‘Storytelling’ and based in The Bear Pit Sheffield, a 19th century bear cadge and fighting pit.  The design was based on the children’s book  The Very Hungry Caterpillar and focused on the idea of a space being eaten into like a caterpillar eats into a leaf and how colour can effect learning.

An enclosed cave like space was created, which would sit inside the original structure, using concrete. Colour and lighting was used to represent each stage of growth of a caterpillar and create different moods in each space. E.g. blue for the reading spaces as it is a calming colour. Colour inspirations were taken from the book its self. The visuals here show how the space would work for people using it and also emphasise the textures and colours created.
